The 1956 Version of Invasion of The Body Snatchers.
Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974). Apart from 1972's "Night of Fear", up until TCM there hadn't been anything nearly as visually confronting or brutal within the 'deranged backwater stalker' sub-genre of Horror.
I'd chose either The Exorcist or The Omen. Those two are still my favorite.
Personally I would say either "The Thing from Another World" or Psycho. simple but really effective
