I'd start them out with something they have a framework for and it wouldn't be too traumatic, ghosts..."The Haunting" 1963 version

Saw, I think. It has most everything the newbie might need to see illustrated in film.

Carpenter's The Thing

I have to agree with Autumnforest ans say the 1963 The Haunting. Classic and a perfect introduction.

Cheers!

Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974). Apart from 1972's "Night of Fear", up until TCM there hadn't been anything nearly as visually confronting or brutal within the 'deranged backwater stalker' sub-genre of Horror.

I'd chose either The Exorcist or The Omen. Those two are still my favorite.

Personally I would say either "The Thing from Another World" or Psycho. simple but really effective

Halloween, from '78.

Return of the Living Dead.

There's plenty of "giggles" in case the gore gets to be too much. Just the right dash of mixins'.

Martyrs of course!

For serious, I would go with something like The Thing of Halloween as said in previous answers.

LOL Nigel's answer is LOLZ. Paranormal Activity.

Why?

Because it does it's job for horror newbs and blue hairs.

"Bambi." If they can watch that without having a heart attack, they can watch just about anything.
